Description
(Roman Republican Moneyers and their coins, Michael Harlan, 1995) There is no mention in history or literature of the moneyer Gaius Considius Nonianus. This coin, which rarely appears in hoards, is the only knowledge of the man. The most common interpretation of the reverse is that the scene represents the temple of Venus at Eryx in Sicily. Harlan describes another approach: the temple was a replica of the one on Sicily ,dedicated by Lucius Porcius Licinius in 181 B.C., and was located outside the Colline Gate. The affiliation of the Nonii and the Sullans during L. Sulla’s reign links this design to the victory at the Colline Gate for it was near the temple of Venus Erycina that Sulla set up his camp before the battle.
